Alfresco designs Melbourne
Want a beautiful outdoor space to relax and entertain in?
In Australia, we love spending time outside. Enjoying sunny days, having a few drinks and a BBQ, and spending time with family and friends.
In Melbourne, where the weather can be extremely hot, cold, windy, and wet (on the one day), it pays to have an alfresco area so you can entertain in any weather.
Why build an alfresco area?
Alfresco areas are all about being able to relax and socialise outdoors in any weather. They blur the line between inside and outside, creating an easy flow between living spaces. Good flow is important – you’ll spend more time outside, taking your coffee and paper out into the morning sun, having lunch outside with the kids, or endless summer BBQs where family and friends spread out in comfort.

We create alfresco concept designs that are to scale. All of our concept plans are suitable for landscape construction, but some elements of your design like alfrescos and pergolas may need construction drawings for Council permits. We can arrange that for you with our trusted building draftspeople.
We’ll help you have your project costed by a cost estimator so you can control your project and budget knowing how much you should be paying for building quotes for construction. We can show you how to make sure everything is in check so permits are granted. You can then tender out the project to different builders for construction so you are in control of your project and budget.
Beautiful gardens should be within reach for everyone. No matter what your budget, we’ll show you what’s realistic and share insider tips to make your money go even further.Book an appointment
What things do we consider in designing your alfresco area?
Alfresco areas are comfortable outdoor spaces designed for luxury and relaxation. Before and during the design process, we ask lots of questions to deeply understand what you want to achieve.
The design will change depending on how you want to spend your time, the weather where you live, what direction your house faces, and much more.
- Why do you want an alfresco area?
- What will it be used for? Mainly entertaining, or mainly for you?
- How often will you use it? In the morning, afternoon, or evening? Just summer, or all year round?
Where does the sun travel in relation to the space in the different seasons…and how will this affect the way you use your area? (For example, we plan your garden to maximise shade in summer and sun in winter. You don’t want the BBQ in an area where the head chef gets sun in their eyes while working there, right?)
What features do you want? Ceiling fans, outdoor heating or fireplace, a louvre roof, TV, skylights, downlights, sound system, pool table, pizza oven, outdoor kitchen, BBQ, a bar, dining table, lounge furniture?
What materials do you want? For posts and pillars, roof structures, flooring, privacy screens?
Are there any accessibility considerations for people who will use it? Child-friendly, rails for older people, wheelchair access?

“We wanted lots of privacy around our outdoor living areas and outdoor kitchen, and spaces for our kids to play with their friends in the garden. It needed to match the traditional style of the home we were building. Lisa worked with a CAD program so we were able to see that garden before it was built.”

Frequently asked questions.
What’s the difference between an alfresco area and a patio, verandah, or pergola?
They are all great places to enjoy relaxing and entertaining in your garden. The main difference is that alfresco areas are generally built under the main roof of the house and look like a part of the original roof structure. They can be part of a new build or an extension that’s added later. Patios are attached to the existing building but are separate to the roof line. Verandahs are covered areas that wrap around the house to provide shade and are often narrower than the rest, while pergolas can be attached to the house or freestanding, and usually don’t have a roof, instead using climbing plants as protection from the sun.
How do you furnish an alfresco area?
We’re experts in exterior styling. When choosing furniture, you’ll need to decide whether you want to dine, or lounge, or both. Lightweight outdoor furniture that can be moved aside to create standing room (or dance floors) adds great flexibility. Soft furnishings like cushions and throws add colour and texture so your alfresco area becomes another room of the house. Lush greenery from potted plants and vines are the perfect finishing touch. We can share local supplier details for you to buy from, or we can purchase, deliver, and install your alfresco furniture and furnishings for you.
How much does it cost to build an alfresco area?
The size of your alfresco area and the materials you choose will determine the cost, which can vary widely. To get a guide, book your alfresco design discovery call now. With a rough idea of the result you’re after, we can provide you with a free estimate to help get your project started.
