Heritage garden design Melbourne

We design stunning historic gardens.

If you’re lucky enough to have a beautiful, historic home, you’ll want a garden that reflects the architectural style and era of the home.

We specialise in the creation and renovation of gardens for inner city and suburban heritage homes, as well as landscape designs for sprawling country properties.

For local clients we do onsite visits to immerse in the property, gardens and history. For those further afield, our digital capabilities allow fully remote design services or we can travel to you to spend time walking through your garden discussing your vision with my input. We can continue to meet in person or online, research remotely and use sophisticated digital design capabilities to deliver amazing outcomes.

No matter where you’re located, we’d love to help you create a beautiful garden that brings out the character of your heritage home.

Lisa is a member of National Trust of Australia and Australian Garden History Society, she has travelled the world studying famous historic gardens as it is her deep passion.

Heritage gardens.

Heritage gardens can be tricky – it’s great to use trees, shrubs, and flowers that reflect the home’s era, but this can result in gardens that are quite high maintenance. We can work with you to create the most beautiful traditional formal gardens, or a more modern fusion that’s easier to maintain while still showcasing your lovely heritage home.

Large property landscape design

If you have a large rural property, or heritage home with acreage, the sheer scale of the garden can be overwhelming. You might know that you want a leisure garden, pool, tennis court, herb garden, and vegetable gardens that bring in permaculture principles for sustainable agriculture practices, but have no idea how to bring it all together seamlessly. We can work with you to create a manageable landscape plan that can be built in stages as your budget allows, or recommend landscapers who will take care of the entire build for you.

What things do we consider in designing your historic garden?

Your garden is your outdoor oasis, a place to relax, and feel connected to nature. Before and during the design process, we ask lots of questions to deeply understand what you want to achieve with your landscaping project.

What do you love about your garden? What don’t you like? What do you want to do in your garden – dine and entertain? Grow food? Relax? Play with kids? What’s the most important aspect to you? Do you like spending time gardening? How faithful with your plant selection do you want to be to the era of your home? What features do you want – paths, formal gardens, raised garden beds, kitchen garden, rainwater irrigation, tennis court, pool, outdoor dining? Where is the path of the sun?

Certain architectural eras have different features and elements in heritage gardens which are carried throughout as a trend from the time. Statues, step styles, materials used, garden layouts and designs, all are influenced by famous designers of the time who like the impressionist painters began a trend which left us with footprints of the people who lived in them. Some people want to bring back the plants and features of the times which honour the home itself at the time it was built.

Our customers love our historic landscape designs.

“Before hiring Lisa Harper to design and renovate our garden, it was overgrown, boring and hard to maintain. Working with Lisa on the design we were able to communicate our wants and needs and see them incorporated into the design, the transformation was amazing. Lisa made it much more functional, enjoyable and has added thousands to the value of our property. I would recommend using Lisa to transform your garden, we have been very happy with the result.”
